Farm to School Harvest of the Month Materials

One of the ways farm to school (F2S) is delivered in Buffalo Public Schools is through a Harvest of the Month Program. Recognizing early that it wasn't enough to simply menu new F2S recipes, the Buffalo Farm to School team, through the support of a local graphic designer, developed Harvest of the Month posters, infographics and nutritional newsletters, specific to items we grow in NY and serve in our cafeterias. Branded initially for Buffalo, we have created a generic version of all the materials, so schools across NY can access and use at their pleasure.

Currently, materials have been created for 13 harvest's and another five are in development. Below are sample materials for root vegetables. We also have them developed for apples & pears, asaparagus, broccoli & cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, corn, dried beans, field greens, kale, potatoes, tomatoes, and winter squash. All Harvest of the Month documents can easily be edited in Adobe, should you want to add your County/school district's name.

Also, recipes per harvest item are available on Buffalo's F2S website. Special recognition to the following: Buffalo Public Schools, for sharing these resources widely, Julian Montague, graphic designer responsible for their creation, and Eat Smart New York of Western NY for providing the nutritional content. Feel free to reach out directly for information on printing specifics.

Field Guide: Arthropod Pests of NYC Vegetables

Arthropod Pests of NYC Vegetables aims to help urban farmers and gardeners find, identify, and understand the most common and important insects and other arthropod pests found in New York City farms and gardens. Some of these pests are rarely mentioned in other guides but are common in NYC. The guide emphasizes scouting tips, including how to identify pests by the damage they leave behind, even when you can't find the insect itself.

This guide was created as a collaboration between Cornell Cooperative Extension's Harvest New York team and the New York State Integrated Pest Management Program.
